Clifftop House

Nestled into a hillside at the eastern end of Hahei Beach this permanent residence blends the ideals of family living with the reductive simplicity of iconic coastal bach.

When viewed from below the long roof hangs between tenacious pohutukawa that bookend the site, the weathered cliff anchoring the bold, built form. Third level living allows the home to embrace the breath-taking view, celebrating the coastal panorama without dominating the treelined crest.

In contrast, the austere approach reveals nothing of the experience to come, a textural ascent, a moody study of material expression, spatial compression and a magical release to the light.
