M House
This Martinborough holiday home has been built around a newly planted olive grove now producing exquisite olive oil under the owners' wonderfully minimal M brand. In a contemporary reference to the classic kiwi hay shed, the design merges the request for a single bedroom bach with outlying guest pods into a singular abstract object. When first seen the long form rests on the rural context, yet upon arrival the corrugated silver structure is revealed as an elevated vessel, floating amongst the olives. The rigorous juxtaposition of open and closed, modern and old, town and country brings a shimmering energy and geometric contrast to this quiet rural site.
